Note: Where "The crucifixion" is the only comment made in the "Fulfillment in Jesus" column, this is because it is generally understood what
happens during a crucifixion, and the Bible writers did not feel it necessary to explain details with which everyone of their time was already familiar.
Old Testament Prophecy | Fulfillment in Jesus
Jesus' "heel" was bruised at the crucifixion; Satan's "head" was bruised when Jesus won complete victory by his death and resurrection. Colossians 2:15 -- and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Galatians 4:4 -- But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.

Jesus is both a king and priest, as was Melchizedek Matthew 27:11 -- And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. [Equates to our modern terminology, "You said it!"] Hebrews 10:11,12 -- And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God. (See Hebrews 5-10 for further study of Jesus' priesthood.) Melchizedek was king of Salem [Jerusalem] -- "King of Peace": Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey--something kings did in order to indicate that they came in peace. He was also establishing by this act that he is the King of Jerusalem. Luke 19:37,38 -- And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen: saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. Melchizedek ... brought forth bread and wine: Matthew 26:26-28 -- ... Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
The "seed" refers to Messiah: Galatians 3:16 -- Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Messiah the blessing on all nations: Galatians 3:14 -- That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
"Shiloh" refers to the Messiah. Jesus was of the tribe of Judah, of David's line. (See Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38.)
I Peter 1:18,19 -- ... ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. John 1:29 -- the next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! Hebrews 9:14 -- how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the lving God?
John 7:37,38 -- In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. I Corinthians 10:1,4 -- Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; ... and did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (Remember also that Jesus was "smitten" for our sins, as Moses smote the rock.)
Jesus was crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem: John 19:17,18 -- And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: where they crucified him .... Hebrews 13:11,12 -- For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
Jesus died on the cross at the time the Passover lambs were being slaughtered: John 18:28 -- Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. Luke 23:44-46 -- And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. ... And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, ... he gave up the ghost.
"Leave none of it unto the morning": John 19:31 -- The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) besought Pilate ... that they might be taken away. "Nor break any bone":John 19:33,36 -- But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: ... For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

John 8:26-28 -- I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. ... I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. John 5:45,46 -- Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Galatians 3:13 -- Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. "Not remain all night upon the tree": John 19:31 -- The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) besought Pilate ... that they might be taken away.

Acts 4:27 -- For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together. |
Acts 2:29-32 -- Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; he, seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. Luke 2:27-32 -- And he [Simeon] came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Acts 26:22,23 -- ... saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: that Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
Luke 2:46,47 -- ...they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.[Jesus at twelve years of age] Mark 6:2 -- and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? John 7:14-16 -- Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
John 8:28,29 -- ...I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. ... for I do always those things that please him.
John 19:1 -- Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. Mark 14:65 -- And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands. (See also Matthew 26:67)
Result of the scourging and beatings. (See John 19:1-6, Matthew 26:67-68, Mark 14:65, Luke 22:63-65)
John 12:37,38 -- But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: that the saying of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath belived our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
"A root out of a dry ground": Israel was very spiritually dry at the time of Jesus' appearing. There had been no prophet to speak God's word for 400 years. "No form nor comeliness...": Possibly refers to his appearance after the scourgings and beatings, possibly refers to his humble station in life, whereas the Jews were looking for a regal Messiah.
John 6:66 -- From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. John 15:18 -- [Jesus speaking] If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. "a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief" -- His sufferings at the time of his death, and also his sorrow over death and trouble during his lifetime (at Lazarus' grave Jesus wept, John 11:35)
The sufferings of Jesus by scourging and beatings at his trial, and at the cross. Matthew 8:16,17 -- When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
The cross. See also 2 Corinthians 5:21 -- For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Matthew 26:62 -- And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace. Matthew 27:12-14 -- And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marveled greatly.
"Taken from prison and from judgment": Matthew 27:1,2 -- When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: and when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. "Who shall declare his generation?": Jesus had no children (no "generation" to declare), cut off from life in His prime. "For the transgression of my people ...": Romans 5:8 -- But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Matthew 27:57-60 -- When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: he went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. John 19:41,42 -- Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre ws nigh at hand. (It was important that Jesus be buried at Golgotha, the place of crucifixion, because of the Isaiah Scripture that "he made his grave with the wicked." Crucified criminals were commonly buried at the site of crucifixion. It is odd that a rich man of Arimathea would have chosen to build a tomb for himself in such a place. Some scholars believe that Joseph perhaps had been impressed of the Holy Spirit to do this, so that this Scripture could be fulfilled.) "He had done no violence...": John 18:38 -- ... He [Pilate] went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
"He shall see his seed": Those that obtained eternal life through his death (See Hebrews 2:10-14). "An offering for sin": Hebrews 9:26,28 -- ...but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. ... so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. "The pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand": God's plan is fulfilled through Jesus. "He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied": Hebrews 12:2 -- ...who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
"A portion with the great ... divide the spoil with the strong": Speaks of Jesus' total victory over Satan through his death and resurrection, and his ascension to the throne of God. Mark 15:27,28 -- And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. And the Scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. "Made intercession for the transgressors": Luke 23:34 -- Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
John 18:37 -- ... To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Acts 10:45 -- And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 11:18 -- When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Acts 13:48 -- And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

See Scripture verses fulfilling Isaiah 55:5, above.
Matthew 11:5 -- the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Examples of "binding up the brokenhearted, proclaiming liberty to the captives, opening of the prison to the bound" are: Jesus helping the widow of Nain by raising her son from the dead (Luke 7:11-17), Mary Magdalene set free of seven devils (Luke 8:2), the Gadarene demoniac delivered (Luke 8:26-39), etc.
These verses show that the Messiah would be both man (the Son of David) and God (THE LORD). (Most of this passage speaks of the Messiah's future reign on the earth.)
Matthew 2:16-18 -- Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, In Ramah was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
There was no king in Israel, from the time of the captivity in Babylon, until the coming of Christ. John 18:37 -- Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth ....
John 10:11 -- I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. Of David's line: Luke 1:26,27 -- ...the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

The commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem came in 446 B.C. (or BCE). 69 "weeks" refers to weeks of years (69 X 7 = 483 years). Hebrew years were 360 days long, so this would equate to a little over 476 of our years, putting the Messiah's time at approximately 30 A.D. (or CE). "After threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off" (Jesus' death at approximately 33 A.D. (CE), which may be slightly off due to inaccuracies in our calendars, compared to the ancient calendars.) Note also that the Messiah would be cut off before Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed, which happened in 70 A.D. (CE). But not for himself: Jesus died, not for his own sins, but for ours. Consider also John 11:49-52 -- And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; and not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
Luke 24:46 -- And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.
Matthew 2:13-15 -- ... the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
John 11:43,44 -- And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. (This verse will be more completely fulfilled at the final resurrection of the dead in Christ. See I Corinthians 15:55-57 and I Thessalonians 4:13-17.)
Luke 23:44,45 -- And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened .... (See also Mark 15:33, Matthew 27:45)
Born in Bethlehem: Luke 2:4-7 -- And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son .... "From everlasting": John 8:57,58 -- Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
The Messiah needed to come to the 2nd temple--the one being referred to by Haggai. This temple was then destroyed in 70 A.D. (CE)
Jesus was a descendent of Zerubbabel. (See the genealogies of Jesus, Matthew 1:12-16 and Luke 3:23-27.)
John 1:14 -- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 10:16 -- And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. [Jesus speaking of the Gentiles who would also come to believe on Him] (This is a double prophecy, which will be further fulfilled during Jesus' thousand year reign upon the earth.)
"The BRANCH": Jesus was called the Nazarene. Nazareth means branch. "He shall build the temple of the LORD": God's "temple" is now the hearts of his people. I Corinthians 3:16,17 -- Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and tht the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
Jesus unites both the kingship and the priesthood in Himself His kingship: Matthew 1:1 -- The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. John 18:37 -- Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world .... His priesthood: Hebrews 9:11,12 -- But Christ being come a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (See Psalm 110 and Hebrews 5-10 for an in-depth explanation of Jesus' priesthood.)
Matt. 21:2-9 -- (Quoting vs. 6 and 7 only) And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
Matthew 27:3-7 -- Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
John 19:34 -- but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
"Sword against my shepherd": The crucifixion, carried out by the sword of Rome "Sheep shall be scattered": Matthew 26:56 -- ... Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Matthew 11:9,10 -- [Jesus speaking of John the Baptist] But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
Luke 1:16,17 -- [The angel Gabriel speaking of the coming birth of John the Baptist] And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Matthew 11:14,15 -- [Jesus speaking of John the Baptist] And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (This is a double prophecy, which will again be fulfilled literally in the end times. See Revelation 11:1-14.) |
